Two private security companies in Afghanistan were raided and shut down this week, and a dozen contractors would be closed soon, the Afghan police said. Afghan officials said that some security firms were involved in robberies and kidnappings and some others were suspected of involvement in murder. The Afghan government's main complaints against the companies are a lack of accountability, intimidation of Afghans, and disrespect for local security forces. The Interior Ministry says that more than 60 Afghan and international security companies are registered, and more that 100 people are working for the firms. Afghan police provided security for the raid on the companies, according to police Gen. Ali Shah Paktiawal. Paktiawal said other firms targeted for closure would be raided by Afghan police next week. "There are some companies whose work permits have expired, and there are some companies who have illegal weapons with them," he said. "We do not want such private security companies to be active in Afghanistan. It doesn't matter if they are national or international." HE/RE |
